Technology management

There's no question that good tech skills earn good money. And while the job market is strong, some students are tempted to skip the traditional college route and turn their skills into cash.

This can be a very attractive option. You're able to focus on a skill - something you really enjoy. You can get your certification or associate's degree quickly. And you'll get right to work, picking up valuable experience and maybe a few more certifications.

But then what? Employers can replace these skills all too easily. So when jobs become more scarce (not yet, but always a possibility!), you need something more in order to compete. The ability to combine technology and people, the ability to communicate, the ability to lead will set you apart. These are the skills that employers value most.

This may explain why, according to recent reports, the demand for liberal arts graduates is stronger than ever in today's job market. And it may explain the proliferation of technology management degrees being offered in business and IT programs around the world.

When you're ready to take your skills to the next level, the most common route is through a business program with a concentration in technology management. Some are now available at the undergraduate level, and many are offered at the graduate level, often within an MBA program.
