SHRM Certification

According to SHRM, Human Resource Management can be a tough field to enter. Certification in HR is not required, either by the state or the industry, but it is an excellent way to break into the field and to advance your HR career.

Professionals who have worked in the HR field for at least two years are eligible for SHRM certification by exam. This certification is provided by HRCI, the Human Resource Certification Institute, at two levels: PHR – Professional in HR, and SPHR – Senior Professional in HR. The PHR exam covers the technical/operational aspects of HR, while the SPHR exam focuses on strategy and policy.

SHRM certification is valid for 3 years. After 3 years, you must re-certify, either by exam or through 60 hours of experience. Exams are offered twice a year (in May and December) or in June at the SHRM Annual Conference. The exams cover the basic functional HR areas: Management Practices, General Employment Practices, Staffing, HR Development , Compensation & Benefits, Employment & Labor Relations, and Health/Safety/Security. Course materials include workbooks corresponding to each functional area.

SHRM courses may be taken through self-study materials or in a classroom. There may also be a course at your local college. One important consideration: If your course is offered by an accredited institution, you may be eligible for tuition reimbursement from your employer. To find a list of schools where instructor-led classes are available, visit HRCI .

SHRM Certification provides many opportunities:
  • Advances your career
  • Provides knowledge you need in all HR content areas within your current job
  • Opens the door to new job opportunities
  • Prepares you for the HRCI exams
  • Provides networking opportunities with other HR professionals
  • Helps you earn credit toward re-certification
