Certified Financial Planner

The demand for financial planners is growing as "baby boomers" approach retirement age. There are many paths toward becoming a certified financial planner, but they all lead to the CFP Certification Exam. For comprehensive information on certification requirements, visit the CFP Board of Standards web site. Here you can also download a pdf version of the Board's General Information Brochure.

The easiest, fastest way to meet CFP education requirement is to take an educational program at one of the more than 80 colleges and universities registered with the Board. You'll find a listing of these programs in the General Information Brochure.

Of course, you can also satisfy the education requirement through other degree programs as long as they have a finance focus. If you choose this route, you will have to submit your transcript for review by the Board. Any educational gaps identified must be filled through additional courses before taking the exam.

Topics to be mastered include the major financial planning areas:

  • process of financial planning
  • insurance planning
  • investment planning
  • income tax planning
  • retirement planning and employee benefits
  • estate planning

Campus-based Board-certified financial planning programs are available at more than 80 colleges and universities across the country. A few of these programs are also available online:

    1. The College for Financial Planning offers web-enhanced programs including their flagship product, the CFP Professional Education Program, designed to fulfill the CFP education requirement. The College also offers a Master's Degree and a full range of certificate programs in areas of specialization, e.g., asset management, mutual fund counselor, retirement plan counselor.

    2. Florida State University offers an online certification program.

    3. The American College has an online program at graduate and professional distance education levels. Since the program is self-study you can sign up any time.
