Journalism
While journalism is a very competitive field, journalistic training is also a valuable preparation for other communications careers such as advertising, public relations or technical writing. Typically, you'll need a bachelor's degree to get a first job in journalism. A degree in journalism will get you off to a head start, but many other majors may also prepare you for a journalistic career. Depending on the job, specific subject expertise, e.g., political science, economics, business, may be even more important--as long as you can write. This is a field where experience counts. Emphasis in undergraduate journalism programs is on building a strong liberal arts foundation, reinforced by technical skills in writing, editing, reporting as well as practical skills developed through internships. There are also many graduate programs offering master's degrees in journalism or mass communications.
