Marketing
The marketing function is where an organization interacts with the outside world-customers, partners, suppliers, distributors and press. That's why a job in marketing often provides an entry into a top management position. Marketing encompasses a variety of activities and utilizes a broad range of skills, including business, psychology and communications skills. And marketing jobs are found in all industries in organizations of any size. There are several distinct marketing fields to choose from: Brand management, marketing research and international marketing are most attractive to business majors, while marketing communications appeals primarily to those with a creative bent. The job market is strong in all of these fields. The Bureau of Labor reports that employment for marketing professionals is rising rapidly, especially in new media jobs. The earnings potential is high, but hours can be long. And competition is intense. The best preparation for a marketing career at the undergraduate level is either a liberal arts degree or a business degree with a marketing focus. For entry into advertising and pr jobs, students often pursue a business communications major. An MBA, often with a specialization in Economics or Marketing, is recommended for students seeking top management positions in marketing.
