Nursing Education

Between managed-care related staff cuts and declining nursing school enrollments, the nursing field is suffering a shortage of skilled workers. So if you've been considering a career in nursing, now is a good time to start.

In order to practice nursing, you must be licensed by the state through the NCLEX-RN exam. There are several paths open to you to prepare for this exam.

  • You can enter a diploma program, usually offered through a local hospital. This takes about two-three years.

  • You can go for an associate's degree of nursing (A.D.N.) at a local community college. This usually takes about two years.

  • Or you can pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing (B.S.N.) through a four-year college.

There are more associate's degree programs offered than any other, but a bachelor's seems to offer the most opportunity for advancement. You might start with an A.D.N., earn your license, and then go to work for a hospital where you may qualify for tuition reimbursement to continue your studies in a B.S.N. program.

    Online Programs

In response to demand from working adults, more and more colleges and universities are beginning to offer nursing programs online. Because they're designed for adults, most of these programs are open only to currently working RNs.

Here are a few of the online programs available:

  • University of Phoenix - BS/MS Nursing
  • Excelsior College - One of the largest distance learning nursing programs offers Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Nursing.
  • Florida State University - RN to BSN offered in conjunction with St. Petersburg Junior College.
  • University of Central Florida - RN to BSN
  • National University - BS Nursing
  • Athabasca University - RN to BN
