Social Work
According to the Labor Department's Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment opportunities for social workers are growing. Social workers are employed in a range of environments, including mental health facilities, community centers, hospitals, schools and corporations. Some social workers go into private practice. Whichever area you choose, strong counseling skills are critical. The minimum requirement for entry into the field is a Bachelor's degree (B.S.W.). For work in clinical practice and health/mental health facilities, a Master's in Social Work (M.S.W.) is necessary. Accredited programs all require a specified amount of supervised fieldwork. There are many degree programs in social work available. To find them, start at the Council on Social Work Education web site. The CSWE accredits both B.S.W. and M.S.W. programs, and offers a searchable directory of these programs on the site. The New Social Worker Online also offers a directory of colleges and universities with social work programs. You can search by school name or by city. Each state has its own licensing requirements for social workers. There are four levels of licensing exams - basic, intermediate, advanced and clinical. To find out which exams are required for licensing in your state, check with the state social work board. There's a directory of state boards available at the American Association of State Social Work Boards (ASWB) web site. There you'll also find general information on licensing requirements and a description of the licensing exams. TOP |
