Shimer College

Shimer College, Shimer classrooma small liberal arts college in Chicago, Illinois, is a school with a difference. The focus is on reading, discussing and writing to develop critical thinking.

  • Small classes
  • Discussion group format
  • Integrated curriculum
  • Reading of original sources (no textbooks)
  • Core curriculum in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and integrative studies
  • Active learning
  • The flexibility of tutorials for 1-3 students

The Weekend Program for adult students meets every third weekend - all day Saturday and Sunday. This schedule allows students to take a full course load each term.

There's also an overseas study program at Oxford, where students study under a Shimer faculty member and Oxford tutors.

The Shimer style appeals to self-motivated, individualistic students seeking a strong foundation in liberal studies. Students develop a lifelong habit of inquiry and a love of learning, which may account for the large percentage of Shimer students who go on to earn doctorates. (Shimer ranked third in a study of schools sending the most students on to earn a Ph.D.) In fact, many feel their undergraduate experience is already at the graduate school level.
