The University of Phoenix Online

Formed in 1989, the University of Phoenix Online is specifically designed for working adults. There are approximately 9,500 online students currently enrolled, with an average age of 38. The University of Phoenix Online is fully accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges & Schools (NCA).

At-a-glance:

  • Courses can be completed entirely online.

  • Students are not overwhelmed--they take just one class at a time. Classes last from 5-6 weeks, and run in sequence.

  • Since there are no semesters, students can start a course in any month.

  • Classes are small, with groups of 8-13. Each class has its own forum where students can communicate with each and test out ideas before presenting them to the instructor. And the classroom is always open, so students can log in whenever it's most convenient for them.

  • The technology is not intimidating. Class forums use familiar Microsoft technology. Students will need a Windows-based computer, word processing and spreadsheet software, and Internet access.

  • International students are accepted. The online program currently has students from over 21 countries. Non-U.S. academic credentials will have to be evaluated by the University prior to admission, and international students must provide TOEFL scores. The only caveat: Since the programs are designed for working adults and student visas do not allow students to work, the University is not authorized to accept applicants on student visas.
