From Computer Repair to Web Design I am 50 years old. I'm recently separated. And I've been back in school for two years! A little background here: I've always been very intelligent. Graduated high school at 16. When I finished college the first time in the 70s, I was one of the first women in the country in the computer repair field. I graduated fourth in a class of over 50 men! This was during the EEO era, and I was wined and dined by every major computer company and military branch in the country. A wonderful time for me :). Now, back to the present: Two years ago I signed up for an eight day class (called "intercession," which means it was very concentrated) at Palomar College in San Marcos, California. I wanted to find out how to make a web page. At the end of this eight-day class I had 3 sites built. I had found my new niche! Web design was simple for me. But I had no idea what to do with my sites or how to make them visible to the world. During this class, I sat next to a lovely lady (my age) who was making some beautiful logos on her project. I couldn't do that! I found out she was using another product, Adobe Photoshop. Now I had to take that class, too, so I could let my creative juices flow. I've always been artsy and craftsy -- I've got a garage full of half-finished projects to prove it! So taking the Photoshop class was wonderful. Art on a computer! That first class was in January of 1998. I've been in school every semester since. I love being in college. I have enough units to receive two certificates now. All I need are the general education requirements to have my degree in "The Internet with a Graphic Communication Emphasis." Fall semester starts August 21, and I've signed up for five classes (16 units), two of which are General Ed. In each class about 20-50% of the other students are adults. I have made close friends with several of my fellow students. One became an instructor at the school, another graduated last semester and is now a junior at a four-year university! By the way, even though I have a heavy work and class schedule, I've managed a 3.895 cumulative GPA, and am a member of Phi Theta Kappa--an International Honor Society for two-year colleges. I have also been on the Dean's List since my third semester. And I was recently nominated by Phi Theta Kappa to put my profile in "The National Dean's List" a book "Honoring America's Outstanding College Students." (You have to be nominated to be featured in this publication.) Look at my web site... dig through it because there's about 100 pages to it. You can see what the last two years has taught me. http://www.Bobbye.cc. |
